FOCUS-5: a practice protocol that keeps agency intact
FOCUS-5 is designed for reversible, private and low-stakes exercises. It is not a method for making a consequential choice. The useful output is a written question, not the swing.
Set purpose and an explicit boundary.
Watch baseline drift before meaning.
Pre-register prompt labels plus unclear.
Describe one pass; do not chase a result.
Move from metaphor to a real-world check.
A sample code might be: circle = “expand the frame,” line = “name the constraint,” still or unstable = “gather missing context.” Nothing in those phrases is discovered by the object. You designed a small prompt deck, and motion selected where to begin.

For group play, each participant writes their own prompts and may opt out. Never use motion to expose secrets, label someone's energy, test honesty or create pressure. The point is to compare reactions and conventions—not people.
Dowsing, water and lost objects: replace certainty with a search plan
Dowsing uses rods, pendulums or related devices to search for water, minerals and hidden items. The U.S. Geological Survey notes that dowsing demonstrations can look persuasive, while accurate groundwater location depends on hydrologic, geologic and geophysical knowledge and testing. Because subsurface water is widespread in many regions, apparent success does not establish that the tool detected it.
For a lost object, create a checkable search instead: reconstruct the last confirmed use; list transition points such as doorways, bags and vehicles; divide the area into zones; search top to bottom; mark completed zones; ask others without accusation. For water, utilities, wiring, gas, structural conditions or land decisions, use qualified technical assessment.
A pendulum cannot locate a missing person, identify a suspect or verify danger. Contact the relevant authorities and professionals, preserve evidence and share only confirmed information.
Why the swing feels responsive
A suspended weight enlarges tiny changes at its support. Grip, posture, breathing, fatigue, cord length, drafts and an initial push all shape the path. The APA Dictionary of Psychology describes ideomotor activity as movement related to ongoing thoughts but produced without volition. That gives us a grounded explanation for a swing that feels self-starting without accusing the holder of deliberate steering.
Try a simple comparison: record 20 seconds before you know the motion code, then another 20 seconds after reading it. Keep the cord and posture as similar as possible. Describe differences without claiming the exercise proves or disproves a worldview. It demonstrates one important variable: expectation can participate in observation.
Worked example: a studio block
Alex has three unfinished sketches and feels stuck. They set a harmless purpose: choose a starting prompt, not the “best” artwork. Their code is circle = expand one sketch, line = remove one element, unstable = compare the deadlines. Baseline motion is slight; the single observed pass becomes circular.
Alex writes, “What one connection could I add?” That question brings up a reference photo from a recent walk. Before changing the sketch, they check the client's brief and the license on the photo. The pendulum did not know the project. A pre-registered prompt interrupted indecision; external constraints still governed the work.
If the prompt had felt irrelevant, Alex could discard it. A symbolic exercise remains optional. It never earns authority through repetition.
